It’s Stavropoleos, an old monastery where devout hands meet in prayer or gather the fruit of inspired minds in a library of modern times. Once you pass the doorstep of the church, the light filtered by the peaceful windows reaches out its rays towards you, like some warm arms, at sunset. Although small, as if trying to hide among the proud buildings surrounding it, the Stavropoleos church owes its stateliness and grandeur to the spiritual spring on which it was founded, and the sensibility and exotic aura to the intertwining of the baroque and oriental. The nuns have voices that know the direct path to the soul, and the prayers whispered here seem to rise on stronger wings. With a charm bringing in mind the Garden of Eden, the inner yard is a mild and comforting heart, opening for you, thirsty traveler! The ivy leaves, clambered on the tomb stones and columns, salute you with curiosity and offer you shadow in the warm afternoons, easing with their sea of green your restless mind. Here you will fully understand what peace of mind means. Take a sit at the stone table and indulge in a drop of joy. For you will time travel, through the thoughts of the shy stones unrolling at your feet, confessing about past times. You will hear the moan of the Greek seas, you will sense the smell of Oriental spices and you will see with the mind’s eye the Romanians of other times, grand, just as only the eternity can make them. If you want to follow your curious nature, the red geraniums will move aside, to bring in front of your eyes flowers and leaves just as lively, even if made of stone, and the carved letters will tell you the story of the people in this place. And, if you are devout, maybe a stairway to heaven will be raised. And for you, dear photographer, this blessed place will offer you unique esthetic emotions. The camera, grateful, will whisper to you that this is what it’s been created for: for this warm sunset light.
